Alpina paint bucket with digital product passport from R-Cycle

Injection molding specialist Jokey is one of the first manufacturers of rigid plastic packaging to produce a series product with a digital product passport (DPP) from R-Cycle. For this purpose, the well-known 10-liter paint buckets of the Alpina Farben brand (part of DAW SE) are provided with a corresponding QR code.

“With the DPP, we are creating transparency along the entire value chain,” explains Gustav Dengel, Product Manager Packaging at Jokey SE. “By digitally documenting all relevant packaging information and making it available at any time, we are also creating an important prerequisite for a functioning circular economy for plastics,” continues Dengel. Jokey relies on the digital product passport from R-Cycle to ensure that packaging can be traced worldwide. The cooperation ensures a standardized data infrastructure for the DPP.

Dorothee Kreis, Head of Packaging DAW SE, adds: “Alpina is a pioneer in the industry when it comes to sustainable products and packaging. Already today, at least 70% recycled plastic is used in various Alpina white buckets. With the digital product passport, we want to actively support modern recycling systems and at the same time provide our customers with transparent information, e.g. on the CO2 footprint of the packaging.”

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a key element of the European circular economy strategy as part of the European Green Deal and the associated goal of achieving a climate-neutral economy by 2050. The digital product passport for plastics is to be introduced in the EU by 2030. It is intended, for example, to support recycling companies in automatically identifying and sorting packaging. This is because separating plastic waste by type enables the subsequent production of high-quality recyclates.

Constantly increasing industrial and legal information and reporting obligations require efficient data management. The challenge here is the often time-consuming and costly generation and provision of the relevant data. In order to aggregate the relevant product data in a simple, standardized way and across company boundaries, R-Cycle customer Pöppelmann is testing the use of Digital Product Passports.
