Pöppelmann plant pots enable simple material verification thanks to the Digital Product Passport

Constantly increasing industrial and legal information and reporting obligations require efficient data management. Proof of compliance with national and international regulations, the calculation of plastics taxes or the fulfillment of individual quality standards by customers are just a few examples for which manufacturers of plastic products have to provide a wealth of information. The challenge here is the often time-consuming and costly generation and provision of the relevant data.

In order to aggregate the relevant product data in a simple, standardized way and across company boundaries, R-Cycle customer Pöppelmann is testing the use of Digital Product Passports. With 2,500 employees, Pöppelmann GmbH is a leading manufacturer in the plastics processing industry and has five production sites with 700 injection molding machines, thermoforming systems and extruders. As part of its TEKU® division, Pöppelmann develops and produces plant pots and professional propagation systems for commercial horticulture.

With the VCG12 Circular360, Pöppelmann is not only presenting a plant pot for the first time that consists of at least 80 percent mechanically recycled plastic and is also fully recyclable - thanks to the use of R-Cycle's Digital Product Passport, the material data can also be traced exactly.

The Digital Product Passport enables:

  • Precise percentage calculation of the plastics tax (PCR share)
  • Simplified sustainability reporting (legal requirements, certificates, PCF, CCF)
  • High product safety (foreign and hazardous substances)
  • Transparent traceability of the materials and recyclates used
  • Trustable and comprehensible consumer communication
  • Better recycling (material data)

Pöppelmann presented the VCG12 Circular360 with the Digital Product Passport for the first time in January 2024 at IPM ESSEN, the world's leading trade fair for horticulture. The plant pot is consistently aligned with the company's circular economy and climate strategy.

"Our Circular360 product range makes it possible to close the material loop completely. In order to maximize the potential of our product features and at the same time provide simple proof to all stakeholders in a sustainable value chain, we are testing a pioneering technology in the form of R-Cycle's Digital Product Passport. We are convinced that the circular economy can only succeed through cooperation and standardized data management. R-Cycle offers an ideal basis for this."
Sven Hoping, Head of Division at Pöppelmann TEKU

R-Cycle offers a turnkey Software-as-a-Service solution for the use of Digital Product Passports (DPP) for plastic products and packaging. The generated DPPs can be retrieved automatically or manually via a suitable marking (e.g. QR codes, RFID or digital watermarks) on the product. Data collection is based on globally established GS1 standards and provides fact-based information about the materials used, recyclability and the product life cycle itself.

WIPAK uses digital product passports to enable efficient packaging data management and compliance for its customers
Producers, processors and brand owners who bring recyclable packaging onto the market want and need to provide a wealth of information to downstream stakeholders along the packaging life cycle. To make it as easy as possible for its customers to use sustainable products, WIPAK has now utilized standardized digital product passports by R-Cycle. This ensures that all relevant packaging information are always centrally and easily accessible, in order to be used for a wide variety of purposes, such as upcoming declarations of conformity for the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR).
